History in the First Person: The Video Diaries of Nelson Sullivan

Presented by Michael Sweeny

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

Called the father of vlogging, Nelson Sullivan was a fixture of New York City’s gay scene during the 1980s. Using then cutting edge VHS and Hi8 technology to obsessively document every aspect of his life -- the parties, subway rides, drag shows and visits to friends’ apartments -- Sullivan crafted, week by week, incident by incident, a video diary of astounding breadth and intimacy. The hundreds of hours of footage he logged provide an indelible snapshot of the city’s LGBTQ+ community at a moment of political and artistic ferment and devastating collective tragedy. Many who appear, including John Sex and Keith Haring, died during the AIDS epidemic while others, such as RuPaul, Lady Bunny and Michael Alig, would go on to achieve fame and infamy. (90 min)
